CCI was founded in 2001 at a Networking for Development conference held in Bangkok.

Since then it has held a number of meetings and events including the following:

Name modified to Cardijn Lay Community


Young People for Development 2003, Bangkok-Chiang Mai, Thailand, 7-25 August 2003, which led to the founding of the YPD network


Young People for Development 2004, Chiang Mai, Thailand, October 2004


New Pentecost 2005, From Vatican II to the World Social Forum, including Asia-Pacific tour by WSF co-founder Chico Whitaker, May 2005


New Pentecost 2006, Winds of Change, with international guests, theologians Edmund Chia and Gemma Cruz.

International Coordination meeting, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, defining vision and mission of the network, adoption of name Cardijn Community International.


New Pentecost 2007, Voices of Hope, with Fr Jojo Fung SJ.

International Year of Cardijn commemorating the 40th anniversary of Cardijn's death on 24 July 1967. Commemorative services in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Chennai and Jamshedpur, India.
